• has completed an initial phase of training in their artistic field
• is on the cusp of visibility

An individual artist will nominate him/herself for the award. The nomination will articulate the individual’s artistic activity, (past, present, and future), which may include research, professional development, facilitation, or creation. It is highly recommended that if an artistic activity involves a partnership (e.g. a mentorship with an established artist) that evidence be provided confirming that partner’s participation. Nextfest will not be responsible for the return of support materials. Please do not send originals.

There is neither word count nor application form. The awards are open to all practices & disciplines. We do not expect applicants to conform to one set of criteria; therefore, applicants may represent themselves in the manner of their choosing. The awards are not intended to fund production costs, promotional materials, or post-secondary tuition, so budgets are not necessary.

Criteria for assessment of nominees will give particular weight to unique practices, and a clear sense of the artist’s niche within their community. The total award allocation for 2013 will not exceed $5,000. The number of awards to be given is not fixed, but generally each award is a minimum of $1,000. Meeting eligibility requirements does not guarantee an award. Awards will be announced and presented on June 6th – the opening day of Nextfest 2013

The 5th Annual Rise Up! – For the politically inclined artist, Rise Up is your revolution – it’s the what-if, the could-be, the should-be, the will-be. Your revolution – it is politics and semantics, artistics and music. What fires you up, pisses you off, makes you passionate about the state of the world?

Saturday, June 8:

The 6th Annual Smut Cabaret – Risqué, sexy, lewd, vulgar… fetishes, desires, sexuality. Bring out your naughty side, taunt and tease, make your audience squirm.

Friday, June 14:

Awe(some)(ful) – The good and the bad. The heroes and the villains. The light and the shadows. The highs and the lows. The love and the hate. The awesome and the awful.

How Can I Get Involved?

PITCH TO PLAY

Founded by Theatre Network, Nextfest is Edmonton’s Emerging Arts Festival.

Nextfest is looking for high school student artist in all mediums to participate as part of the 2013 Nextfest High School Festival taking place June 6-16, 2013 at the Living Room Playhouse (11315 106 Ave NW Edmonton).

Mediums can include (but are not limited to): Dance performance, choreography, visual art, song writing and composition, musical groups, vocal performance, improv, stand-up comedy, slam poetry, podcasts, playwrighting, acting, stage management, sound design, set and costume design, directing, magic. All content presented must be created by a student.

If you are a student artist who has created work of any kind- a piece of choreography, a new script that you mounted for your school’s One Act Play Festival, original songs you perform with your band, a new standup comedy act you’ve wanted to try, visual art, submit it to Nextfest and we will do our best to help you get it in front of an audience.

MENTORSHIP

Get hands on learning from the best. Shadow a professional, attend their rehearsal and ask all the questions you want. Nextfest will pair you up with your very own mentor. Mentorships are available in playwrighting, directing, acting, technical theatre, dramaturgy, design, stage management, dance, choreography, music, visual art, and film.

Wrote a play? Send it to us. Plays will be considered for workshops with professionals, staged readings or full productions. Let Nextfest help you take your writing to the next level.

Workshops: Day long workshop with a professional dramaturge with a public reading at the end of the day

Staged Readings: Learn about your play by putting it in front of an audience

Full Productions: Debut a new work at Nextfest with full set, lights, costumes, and peer actors

THE INAUGURAL NEXTFEST HIGH SCHOOL 10 MINUTE PLAY FESTIVAL

Are you a director without a play? A playwright without a script? An actor without a stage? The First Annual Nextfest High School 10 Minute Play Festival is for you!

On Friday, June 7 meet-up with other student artists to be broken up into groups, assigned tasks (actors, designers, directors, playwrights and more), and given their “inspiration.” Then they have less than a week to take a play from inspiration to opening night! At 9 am on Saturday, June 15 students will gather at the Living Room Playhouse and then at 10:15 am, the race is on to opening night. At 7 pm that night the curtain goes up on these new plays- whether you like it or not!

LONG FORM IMPROV

Whether you’re a professional or a rookie, come jam with students from other schools in this fun and friendly long form improv night.

Nextfest is now accepting visual art submissions for the 2013 edition, taking place June 6-16, 2013!

Nextfest is an opportunity for emerging visual artists under the age of 30 who are creating new work and want to be a part of a dynamic festival. The visual arts venues of Nextfest are located along 124 Street between Jasper and 108 Avenue. We are presently taking submissions for individual shows as well as proposals for installations and temporary murals. Dancefest is geared towards emerging choreographers under the age of 30 who are pursuing a professional career in dance. If this is you, read on!

Submission Requirements

- Statement of interest (why you would like to present your work at Nextfest)

- Choreographer’s CV

- Estimated length of the work

We are looking for films created within the past year by emerging filmmakers. We will consider submissions of any length.

For our purposes, an emerging artist is under 30, has made a personal commitment to a career in the arts, is not yet recognized with professional associations, and is in need of professional development and exposure.

Submission Guidelines:

Please submit your films as digital files (any file type, any resolution or compression).

There is no entry fee.
